Harper Hosts Telephone Town Hall Meeting June 15
6/11/2010

Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery) is inviting residents of the 61st Legislative District to participate in a telephone town hall meeting on Tuesday, June 15, at 7 p.m.

“As is always the case in June, the budget is the main topic of discussion in Harrisburg,” Harper said. “The state is expected to finish the fiscal year with a $1.4 billion shortfall due to declining revenues because of the economy, so lawmakers are now debating how to close that gap. Pennsylvania is required to have a balanced budget, and prioritizing competing needs is never easy.”

Another major challenge facing the Commonwealth again is transportation funding. In April, the federal government rejected the state’s application to toll Interstate 80, which would have generated hundreds of millions in funding for roads and bridges across the state.

A telephone town hall meeting works very much like a traditional town hall meeting, but because people can participate from the comfort of their own home, these meetings typically draw hundreds of people rather than just dozens. People can simply listen in, or they can pose a question on any of the various issues facing state government.

Calls inviting people to participate will start going out about five minutes before the call is to begin. Citizens who miss the call or don’t receive one are invited to call in, toll-free, at 1-877-229-8493 and then enter the code 13162 anytime between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on June 15. The number and passcode will only work on the scheduled date and time of the call.

Harper holds these forums periodically in an effort to keep the citizens she represents informed of actions and issues in the General Assembly and to get their feedback.

The 61st District includes North Wales Borough and portions of the following townships: Montgomery, Plymouth, Towamencin, Upper Gwynedd, Lower Gwynedd and Whitpain.
