Harper Announces Multimodal Grants for Lower Gwynedd, Gwynedd Mercy University
2/12/2018

HARRISBURG – Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery) today announced two local projects are receiving grants through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Multimodal Transportation Fund.

The program is funded by Act 89 of 2013, the comprehensive transportation funding plan which Harper supported to make much-needed investments in highways and bridges, as well as mass transit, bike and pedestrian systems across the Commonwealth.

“These projects are just two more examples of how Act 89 is making our communities better and safer places to live, work and get around,” Harper said. “I commend the township and the university for all of their work to make these grants – and these improvements – possible.”

Lower Gwynedd Township was awarded $937,700 for improvements to Spring House Road, including roadway widening, pedestrian upgrades and traffic signal upgrades to improve traffic flow and efficiency through the Bethlehem Pike, Norristown Road and Sumneytown Pike intersection.

Gwynedd Mercy University was awarded $372,260 to address multimodal hazards at the intersection of Evans Road and the campus’s main access point. The project will first address insufficient access for emergency service vehicles by restructuring the entrance and widening the road. The improvements are also necessary for the university to implement its plans to expand and build an addition to the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions.

The projects were among 45 projects selected to receive grants totaling $41.5 million. More than 220 applications were submitted statewide, requesting more than $241 million. PennDOT made selections based on safety benefits, regional economic conditions, technical and financial feasibility, job creation, energy efficiency and operational sustainability.
