Answering the Call: Need for Fire Company Volunteers Highlighted on Harper’s July Legislative Report Program
HARRISBURG – As area fire companies face more emergency calls with fewer volunteers available to respond to them, the July edition of Legislative Report with Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery) takes a closer look at the many ways the community can support their local fire service.

Harper’s guest on the program is Mike Janssens, chief of the North Penn Fire Company, which primarily serves the communities of North Wales and Lower Gwynedd Township. Janssens, whose family has a long-standing tradition of volunteer firefighting, talks about the challenges facing his company and other local fire departments, but also highlights how his fellow firefighters are like a second family to him. And he says being able to help people in their time of need is “the greatest feeling in the world.”

While volunteer firefighters are always needed, Janssens noted people can help in other ways. The company has a Quick Response Service (QRS) that can provide first aid until an ambulance arrives. The company also holds a variety of fundraisers to help finance equipment, such as radios, air packs and a newly purchased ladder truck, which costs more than $1 million. Volunteers are always needed to help run the fundraisers, allowing the active firefighter members to focus their time on training and responding to calls.

The 30-minute program airs as follows:

• Comcast Cable On Demand.
• Colonial School District, Comcast Channel 28 and Verizon Channel 28 – Airs Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
