Harper’s Legislative Report Program highlights importance of local government
HARRISBURG – While much attention is paid to state and federal governments, local governments are often overlooked, even though they are in a position to have the most immediate impact on communities and their residents. The issues and challenges facing these boroughs, townships, counties, school boards and more are featured on the May edition of Legislative Report with Rep. Kate Harper.

Harper (R-Montgomery) is serving her third term as chairman of the House Local Government Committee, and her guests on the program are Elam Herr, assistant executive director of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS), and Ed Troxell, director of government affairs for the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs.

Among the topics discussed during the program are zoning issues, the impact of the state’s Open Records Act and storm water management challenges. But the point stressed the most by both guests is the importance of being aware of local issues and getting involved, either by volunteering to serve as a borough or township official or simply by attending meetings to learn more about the community in which the person lives.

Harper noted most local government officials serve with little or no compensation but instead are motivated by the desire to make their community a better place.
