Efforts to Battle Pennsylvania’s Opioid Epidemic Highlighted on Harper’s Legislative Report Television Program
HARRISBURG – With heroin and opioid-related overdose deaths skyrocketing in Pennsylvania and across the nation, the April edition of Legislative Report with Rep. Kate Harper focuses on state and local efforts to combat the epidemic.

Harper’s guests on the program are Montgomery County District Judge Andrea Duffy and state Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks), chairman of the House Human Services Committee and long-time advocate for policies supporting drug treatment.

During the program, Duffy outlines the Drug Addiction Resource Alliance she created to help find treatment for people struggling with addiction who appear in her court. The alliance – which also includes law enforcement, treatment providers, the district attorney’s and public defender’s offices, and probation and parole – also holds public forums to raise awareness of the epidemic.

DiGirolamo highlights work done by the Legislature to try to bring the problem under control. Those initiatives include having doctors consult a prescription drug monitoring system to prevent patients from receiving prescription opioids from multiple sources (also known as doctor shopping); providing prescribing guidelines; and encouraging proper disposal of unused medications.
